Haplopelma

Haplopelma lividum

This species has a bright blue shine on carapax and legs that intensifies with every molt. Only adult males loose that color again.

As this spider is a cave dweller, it needs a deep ground cover in the terrarium. The soil has also to be kept fairly moist. When placed in the cage the tarantula will immediately start digging all the way to the bottom of the terrarium. It then stabilizes the extensive cave system with spider silk. Although this is a beautiful spider, it is hardly ever seen and comes out only at night. At the slightest disturbance it speeds for its burrow and is gone. The species is said to take food only slowly, but so far I have not had any problems with my 5 lividum yet.
