Just north of the city are the Harz mountains with the highest peak, the Brocken. The border between east and west Germany went right through the mountain.
Now, Sangerhausen has about 30.000 people. Unfortunately, the unemployment rate is extremely high at about 25 %. One of the reasons why I don’t live there anymore.
The main sights of the city are the world famous Rosarium, the largest collection of roses in the world. They even have a “Black Rose” (well, i’s not really black, but probably as close as a flower gets to being black. There also grows a “Green Rose”, and the petals of this one really are green. The Rosarium is always worthwhile a visit.
Another sight is the Spengler Museum with the skeleton of an ancient mammoth.
Not far from Sangerhausen one can visit a mining shaft whichis not operated for tourists only. The mining company closed down immediately after re-unification and now it is said that the mining museum will also close down in the near future.
There are no pictures form my hometown yet. They are still to be scanned and I will post them here soon.
