Southland

Southland is a sprsely populated area of New Zealand. The biggest city here is Invercargill (52000 inhabitants). For the tourist this area does not hold too many sights, however, it serves as a starting point for excursions to the smaller islands just off the coast like Stewart Island.

Not far from Invercargill, an old couple dedicated their lifes to collecting Paua shells. They decorated their entire house with the polished shells of this mollusc and became one of the attractions of Southland.

Just a few kilometers south of Invercargill is Bluff, the tip of the South Island. Besides an aluminium smelter you find there a ferry that takes you to Stewart Island. This is a pretty rough and windy passage across Foveaux Strait and quite frequently people get seasick on the boat. Alternatively you can catch a small plane that takes you to the island. This way is a lot faster, but you have to make a reservation for the flight early on to get a ticket. They sell fast, especially during the holiday season.

As soon as I get around to scanning the pictures, I will add a Stewart Island section here. Keep coming back!
