Theraphosa

The "King" of all tarantulas. The legspan of this species frequently exceeds 25 cm, the body grows to a length of 12 cm and the abdomen reaches the size of a tennis ball. Apart from its size, the spider itself is not particularly remarkable. Plain brown, most times with a bare abdomen.

I have one blondi at home. It is not all too aggressive, but bombards everyone who gets too close viciously with urtricating bristles. It is said that blondi bristles are especially irritating, but furtunately I'm not sensitive to them. My spider currently has a legspan of about 12 cm, which means it will at least double in size. I feed it with either adult crickets or fully grown locusts (Locusta migratoria). Both of them live only a few seconds once they enter the terrarium. The bottom picture shows a blondi with a locust.
